I dated someone for 5 years 22 years ago. They ended the relationship quite abruptly and I never saw or heard from them again. No contact was made from either of us. Recently my spouse and I were out for the evening and we were laughing at something silly. I then saw my old flame who was looking right at me. They had aged quite a bit in comparison to my spouse who is quite a bit younger than me but I still recognized them. As soon as they made eye contact with me they turned and ran the other way. My question is why would an old flame run away like this if they were the one to break my heart many years ago? Why would they want to hurt me all over again?

- It's certainly a misunderstanding. If they represent something for you, go to them and express yourself in a cool way, express your heart with full honesty.

Did you ever think she may not have had a choice but to leave for some reason and that it hurt her more than you will ever know?

On the flip side I have been sort of in your position. I had someone I knew almost from birth whom I love to this day and he alluded to much more when we reconnected. Then out of the blue, he was with someone else without telling me anything at all! I still love him more than life. And I still don't understand. difference is long distances were between us most of the time.

This person probably is not good with confrontations (even two decades later). Oh well. You have a beautiful wife. Your life is good. If you really want to know, contact this old flame...but let your wife know in case this old flame is out for blood (making up rumors and such). Peace!

He prolly didn't want to relive that part of his life over again. Sometimes it's easier to run away than to deal with the emotions.

possibly because they didnt want to face the fact that they knew they were wrong in leaving so abruptly 22 years ago. they probably felt bad about it all along and didnt want to talk to you face to face about it.

because maybe they were afraid your spouse would beat them up or something
