When I start writing to a CD-RW or adding data to it, my computer power supply shuts off, AND erases any/all data that was on the CD-RW? Lost a lot of data and photos on disk, has happened several times; I did not know the data already on the CD-RW would be erased? I have a Sony DVD Dual/Double layer drive, 80 GB hard drive with 250 GB 2nd hard drive, i.e., lots of backup. I have run all diagnostics, can't figure it out, could it be a virus??

A DVD-RW drive will read and WRITE to CDs. In your case, it may be a power supply problem. If you haven't run a antivirus, download AVG, update it and run it in regular WinXp mode and also in "Safe Mode" (F8 BEFORE WinXP loads up). Also get Ad-Aware and Spy-bot Search and Destroy. Update and run them in the same manner. Remove any unnecessary programs and then do a defrag. If that doesn't do it, start looking at the size of your power supply, it might be overloaded and just shuts down when the DVD drive's motor kicks into high gear and pulls the maximum amount of power.

It's a DVD writer, not a CD writer. You have to buy a CD writer. =) Had the same basic problem.
