I am currently writing a report where I refer to another book (in this case, Walden by Henry David Thoreau). This is not a citation or in the bibliography. I'm just writing: "In Walden, so and so...". If I reference a book like this, should it be underlined or in quotes? I know italics is the easy way to get away with it, but I'm looking for the proper way. Thanks in advance.

Well the proper way to do it is to put it in italics. But when people hand write something, italics are hard to make, so that's where the underlining came from.

My University English teacher always told me that a proper way to reference some thing is like this

"In Walden, so and so," (Thoreau,PAGE #)

If the point is Mid sentence than just do a ... directly inside the quote. Make sure to include the page number, so that if someone wanted to read this for themselves in context they could.

I'm almost positive italics is the proper way. We just covered this in english class.

It depends on if it is MLA or APA or any other number of ways to format a paper. In MLA and APA both it is acceptable to italicize the ttle of a book when refering to it in text. Check out these websites for more help:

Italicize titles of books. This is the proper way.

books are underlined, short stories are in quotes.
however, it is considered proper to italicize.
