Everyone seems to be confusing St. Nick for Santa. St. Nick comes the night of Dec. 5th. And, as most people already know, Santa comes on Christmas Eve - Dec. 24th

We do the St. Nick thing, only I usually just set out some small things for each of my kids. I don't do the sock thing. Sometimes I forget about it, like last year. But my kids are young enough not to know the difference yet. BTW, for all of you who are making fun of this tradition-it is not anything like X-mas eve. St. NIck was a real historical figure, Santa Claus is loosely based on the actual St. Nick. I believe it is called the feast of St. Nicholas, and he was a man in the 3rd century who was known for giving gifts, and that is how it got started. It is mostly a German/Netherlands tradition celebrated by Catholics, Lutherans and Protestants. Not everyone celebrates it. So we will still celebrate X-mas eve as normal. PS-I am also from Wisconsin, and it is big here!

Today is the Catholic feast of St. Nicholas. As kids we would put our shoes outside the door and get a small treat from St. Nick left in the shoe. I believe that is a very old tradition.

It depends upon what country you're in. Some countries, like Germany, have "Sankt Nikolaustag" which means "saint nicholas day."
However, in America, we refer to Santa Claus as St. Nick sometimes. Santa Claus comes on Christmas Eve and gives us all presents. (yay presents!)

I believe that, traditionally, St. Nicholas Day is December 6th. Try searching on yahoo to find out for sure.
