The best way to overcome nervousness about public speaking is to know what you are going to be talking about. Practice your speech, but do not try to memorize it. The need to remember lines causes stress and tension, which leads to nervousness (and sweaty palms) when its time to speak.
Almost equally as important is to know the type of crowd you will be speaking to. Don't be political if the crowd is light hearted, dont be funny if the crowd is expecting something serious.

Just pretend that you do not see anyone in your eyesight and act like your inside of your bedroom or bathroom alone and speak. Block everything else out except your speech that needs to be presented to the people. I use to have the same problem and that helped me out a lot. Now I am able to speak in front of any one very proudly.

Relax, smile, breathe and drink some lemon water which will clear your throat. When you look at your audience imagine them in their underwear so they are so not threatening. Relax, relax in your mind continue say relax! Plan a short speech. Pretend you are enjoying yourself while you speak. Don't talk about politics. Speak on a topic you know and understand and are familiar with to comfortably talk about knowledgeably. Smile, smile smile!

I am telling you the secret right here..........(drum roll)........practice! The more you practice it the more comfortable you will feel. If there is a poster or clock in the back of the room focus on that (gives everyone who is looking at you the illusion that you are looking at the person behind themselves.) Don't invison people in there underwear because if i did that i might get a hard on ;)

You need to breathe. Take yoga to learn to relax your body.
And breathe deeply. The problem is you concentrate of what others will think of you and on your performance. What you need to do is concentrate on your message, how important it is-what you have to say. Your tenseness is affecting your voice. You can learn to relax with yoga. It is a skill. Also concentrate on what you are saying instead of the audience.

Remember the three "B's" of public speaking:
BE polite
BE brief
BE seated!
Nobody wants to hear a long-winded speech.

You shouldn't try to look at one specific person at a time. Imagine that you are doing something that isn't that important. Just talk... Calmly and make sure to know what you're talking about. Before you know it, it's over.
