well the effect of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on the U.S. has been debated over. some say that it was unnecessary and the overuse of power. others say that it saved lives on both sides, simply because if we had done an invasion we would have not been able to get to key political advantage points without going through heavily populated areas.

Estimates at the time were that the Hiroshima bombing, together with the Nagasaki bombing a short time later, by ending the war virtually immediately, saved the United States a million military casualties that would otherwise have resulted from an Allied invasion of the Japanese home islands, and saved the Japanese a comparable number of military and civilian casualties that would otherwise resulted from such an invasion.

The effect was one of elation, the most bloodiest war in history was soon to be over, millions of American boys lives were saved, and the retribution over the sneak attack on Pearl Harbor was accomplished... few thought about the dark shadows of nuclear holocaust that would soon hover over the world...that would come later.

ok..........as for the reaction in the US after the bombs were dropped, I believe that Albert Einstein said it best.............
"The release of atomic power has changed everything except our way of thinking...the solution to this problem lies in the heart of mankind. If only I had known, I should have become a watchmaker"
