Most people will point to iPod, but I want nothing to do with the iPod. It's an MP3 player that works with iTunes music, but there's a "feature" in iTunes that lets you use its music on any MP3 player if you know the trick. That's how I got iTunes music playing on my Palm TX.
If you're looking at a $249 Nano, for the same price you could get a nice, more powerful Palm Tungsten E2 and a nice size SD card. It won't hold as much as a nano of the combined cost, but you'll be happier with it.
The E2 can display photos and play music as the nano can, but can the nano use thousands of free programs you can download off the internet, and communicate with other devices of its kind? Is the Nano easier to use and as useful? NO. If you want a multifunction device, just get a Palm. It can *kinda* play videos. The quality of its video player is good, but not ideal for music videos. The nano can't do it at all! (The full iPod can, but they break)
Not into Palms? You could get an iPod, but look at Creative's line before you make that choice. They're pretty nice.
If you want a Microsoft Zune, get a Toshiba. A high end Toshiba is practically a cheaper and less restrictive Zune.

An iPod is an MP3 player. It just happens to be the most popular brand of MP3 player. There are different types of MP3 players as well as different brands. There are flash type, small hard drive and large hard drive types. Go to consumer reports' website or another electronics review website to see which is the best for you.

Ipod may be popular with the teen set but those of us that are adult and into technology find it over rated. It has pretty good sound using ACC format but does not natively support WMA. It is a lot more expensive than other mp3 players and is a bit proprietary for music downloads.
As stated it has good sound but not great sound, as it would need a higher bit rate to be equal to home units.
I find other mp3 players by Creative, sandisk, iRiver Clix

It depends on the price and song capacity. Some people just get ipods because of the name, but sometimes you get better deals with mp3 players. For example: The Ipod nano doesnt have video, but the sandisk sansa e260 does plus its cheaper.

MP3 player definitely. I enjoy iPod and they work but the bigger ones contain actual hardrives which are incredibly easy to damage and you will lose all your date. In addition, it is incredibly complicated and expensive to buy music in the format an iPod will read and its impossible to change it back.
And MP3 player is smaller, more reliable, and it is simple to move files back and forth. They're cheaper too.

An iPod is a brand of MP3 players. itunes is very user friendly and if you haven't experienced Apple's tech support compared to others than you are in for a treat. If you order your iPod online from apple.com you can have it engraved free! (no, I don't work for apple!) Good luck.
