I'd have to go with Derek Jeter.
You talk about numbers and obviously he isn't up there with Ruth and Rodriguez, but think about it. He's the captain of the Yankees, and he motivates them every single year. He goes out there for every single game, there is no controversy. Jeter puts up consistent numbers - never goes into bad slumps, and plays stunning defense. Even though the Yanks haven't won a title in a few years - the only reason they maintain a good relationship is because of Derek Jeter. If you asked Alex Rodriguez who he wanted to be - he wouldn't say himself, he would say Derek Jeter.. The Captain of the Yankees that everyone likes.

It'd be hard to say anyone other than Babe Ruth. No player in history was the total package that Ruth was in his career. He could hit better than most. He could pitch better than most. He was a phenom.
Other than Ruth, I would say that the top 3 pitchers were Cy Young, Christy Mathewson and Nolan Ryan, and the top 3 position players would be Ty Cobb, Ted Williams and Pete Rose.
And no, Derek Jeter doesn't even rank in the top 100 of all time.

I have to go with Babe Ruth. Had he played in this era he would have had an unbelievable number of home runs. The ball back when he played was softer and the fences were deeper. he also was a really good pitcher. Who knows how good he could have been if he had stayed a pitcher but from his numbers he was doing very well. Even with all of the things they had and didn't have in those days he still had incredible numbers.

Best hitter had to be the Babe. Best pitcher had to be Nolan Ryan. Best player in the clutch has to be David Ortiz. Hope I spelled those names right.
