Let us not forget those who do not heed the past are doomed to repeat it(or something like that)

We are constantly being bombarded by news about actors -- way too much information. In fact most people only "learn" about history from movies and tv shows. My US public school education was not very strong in the area of human civilization, so I had to do a lot of reading and there's still a great deal more I'd like to learn. Unfortunately, the public school curriculum today is even worse.

As a result, the majority of young people today could probably tell you that Lindsay Lohan has been attending AA meetings (which is supposed to be secret, btw) but could not name the larger countries of Western Europe, much less point them out on a map.

Simple. People find cornball showbiz people interesting than they do history about the human race. They find that stuff boring, since most people live in an escapist culture anyway.

For instance, I was talking with friend once about a book I read about kings of England. I started discussing King Richard, King John, and King Charles, and they changed the subject to something about Tom Cruise. It was pathetic....

Not only that, but all one has to do is look at Jay Leno's segment Jaywalking on the Tonight Show. It shows right away how far we went down...

People see actors and feel like they actually know them. In some way celebrites have taken on the roll of the "Tribal Elder" or the "Royal Family" for the world.
Because we have an emiotional response to them and their work our connection is far greater than what we can have with George Washington.

People read gossip because they can...I really don't have a good answer because I never pay attention to that stuff...but I know that quote :)
