Is it all a charade? And if so, why not stop buying into it. (Just start calling them the democratic-republican party, like in the old days, whether or not they officially merge. Then we could have a truly effective opposition party, to run against that entity. Is our political demonizing really making us happier? Then what is it's true purpose? There's no real disagreement between normal people. It's only when people start getting labels that we have disagreement. Then we are all quabbling lobbyists for the simplistic notions we're fed by our "group". Maybe we've been duped. Have you ever wondered?

What a two-party system *should* be, is two sides in heated discussion but nevertheless respectful of each other as fellow Americans. In other words, behaving under the assumption that regardless of whether you are the majority or minority party, there are some *fundamental* ideals that you agree on.
The problem is when you have truly divisive people like Karl Rove or Tom DeLay pulling the political levers. (If you have somebody in the Dem. side that you feel is equivalent, feel free to add them.) These people use *separation* as a strategy. The result is the kind of acidic Americans-*hating*-Americans rhetoric that we see here on YA all the time. People calling each other Repuglicans and Dumbocrats. People accusing the other side of colluding with terrorists. People accusing the other side of "hating America."
In other words, it is not a charade ... but some people have taken this opposition WAY too far.
As for a third party, that would be grand ... but that third party needs to come from the lower reaches of government up. I have never understood why third-party movements in this country have tried to build support for Presidential candidates ... instead of starting to get members elected to state legislatures, then to Congress, then to the Senate. Even a handful of votes in Congress would give a third party leverage to caucus with the two major parties.

i do no longer understand, yet i might evaluate Eric Cantor by way of fact he admits that the Bush era tax cuts are no longer efficient to the subject of our nationwide Debt. His justification for agreeing to extending them grow to be to help leap start up the economic gadget (or a minimum of no longer worsen it). In its own way, that justification is like deficit spending in the time of a time of recession. a needed evil to wrestle a recession yet one which you desire to flow removed from (and pay off) once you ultimately superb your economic gadget. Mitch McConnell, John Boehner and a super style of many different nevertheless purchase into the craptastic economic concept that decrease taxes actual creates extra revenues even with each evidence to the alternative. They nevertheless attempt to apply the Laffer Curve (shaggy dog tale because it particularly is) as justification.

Yes they are opponents. And why they fight is this. Republicans want less and less government for the people, which result in less taxes. And Democrats want more and more government which will result in higher taxes and lead us to comunisim. But there is no conspericy.
