WWII started, japan was getting their oil from the US. when it started, we stopped sending them oil and ticked them off.the got their best generals together to plan an invasion. they settled on a surprise attack on pearl harbor, hoping to destroy the entire Pacific Fleet. on dec. 7, 1941, they struck. after the strike force got back to the carriers, they were disappointed to find out that our carrier fleet was not in the harbor at the time of the attack, which was one of their main objective. they were thrilled to find out that they had completely devastated battleship row, where all but 3 of the battleships of the fleet was anchored. the other 3 were in the dry docks getting repaired. during the attack they also took out over half of the navy planes that were part of the fleet. so they concidered it a complete success. in fact, they were pleased that they called off their third strike.
the next day, the us declared war on japan and acouple days later, nazi germany declared war on the us.

Japan wanted a free hand in the Pacific, to expand its Empire and get control over oil supplies for its growing economy. The U.S. was preventing them with trade embargoes, and breaking those would have meant war. But the Japanese thought that if they crippled the U.S. Pacific Fleet, the war would be over almost as soon as it started. Maybe if they had got the aircraft carriers, it would have been, but we'll never know for sure.
The Japanese plan was for their Ambassador to hand the Secretary of State a note breaking off negotiations on the embargoes, which would amount to a declaration of war, and the attack to be very soon afterwards. But the Japanese Embassy staff made a mess of deciphering and typing up the message, so it wasn't handed over until nearly an hour after the attack, instead of half an hour before it as planned. All through the war and long afterwards, America publicly blamed the Japanese even more for having made the attack without first declaring war, than for the attack itself. The Japanese hadn't meant that to happen, but naturally nobody ever wanted to believe them.

Before the Pearl Harbor attacks, the US stayed out of the war in Europe. After the Japanese attacked the US Pearl Harbor, the country officially entered the war and it became World War II.

In short, the Japanese attacked without a declaration of war our warships at anchor in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. The reason it is significant is that it brought the United States into World War II, which was almost certainly the reason why both Japan and Germany were defeated. After their defeat, we occupied them both and forced them to become peaceful democracies.

On December 7, 1941, the Japanese launced a surprise attack upon the U.S. naval base at Pearl Harbor (despite the fact that they were having diplomatic relations at the time). The attack devasted the U.S. Pacific fleet.
This event brought the U.S. into the war when the U.S. declared war on Japan the next day. The U.S. would fight Japan for the next 4 years until the atomic bombs were dropped and Japan surrendered.
That's it in a nutshell. If you need more specifics, let me know.

"On Dec. 7, 1941, while negotiations were going on with Japanese representatives in Washington, Japanese carrier-based planes swept in without warning over Oahu and attacked (7:55 local time) the bulk of the U.S. Pacific fleet, moored in Pearl Harbor. Nineteen naval vessels, including eight battleships, were sunk or severely damaged; 188 U.S. aircraft were destroyed. Military casualties were 2,280 killed and 1,109 wounded; 68 civilians also died. On Dec. 8, the United States declared war on Japan."
