These are Roman Numerals. M is a thousand, C is a hundred, X is ten, V is five, and 1 is one.
The trick is that numbers on the right get added, but numbers on the left after the first one get subtracted.
M=1000
CM=1000-100 or 900 for a total now of 1900
XXX=30
and 1X=9
So the answer is 1939
