Time and time again I've seen questions on YA about severe health issues. People trying to get answers about what to do for medical emergencies... that obviously need a doctors attention, not advise from posters.

In some of these questions, the posters have come right out and said, "I need help. I don't have any insurance", or "I can't go to the ER, because I know they'll want to keep me there and I don't have any money".

Should healthcare be an option?? Or should it be a right for everyone regardless of ability to pay??

Yes it should be a right! I think socialized medicine is something the American Government needs to seriously think about. There's some crazy number like around 40 million Americans without health insurance. For 5 years I was one. When I turned 19 I went off my mom's insurance and I couldn't afford it. There were a few times in those 5 years that I desperately need it but there was nothing I could do. A dentist mistake cost me 500 dollars to have a wisdom tooth removed. Only to find out later it wasn't a wisdom tooth bothering me but an abscessed tooth. When I found out what it really was and how much I was going to have to pay for a root canal I didn't have that type of cash already being broke from the wisdom tooth. So for months I suffered as my jaw would swell up 3 times it's normal size and I was in completely agnony till I finally had enough together. That didn't even count the crown which was $1,000. So with out that I ended up breaking most my tooth off and I still can't get it fixed because I can only afford health and not dental. Even someone who does have insurence and a medical problem can still pay out the butt for things. I know people who have had major surgy and in their life time they wont even be able to pay their medical bills. It's such a joke.

I come from England where we have health care available to all. Everyone who works pays social insurance and the health care is paid for in that way. Good as this may sound the system is flawed in many ways. Each area or entity has to keep within a budget, so sometimes that means the patient misses out. There are many restrictions about which drugs can be prescibed and so on. If you have a little medical knowledge, you are at an advantage because you can work the system to some extent.
Basically what you have is quantity and sometimes dubious quality but everyone can see a doctor so it depends on your point of view.

I live in a state that has "free" healthcare for some of it's lower-income residents. The system is horribly flawed, because people abuse it. People go to the ER as their family doctor. People use the ER to drug seek. They use it in every way except the way it should be used: for life-or-death emergencies.

Everyone should have healthcare, but there needs to be a system there in which to make sure it's not abused.

In countires where it is a right, they pay 60-80% of their pay to taxes. Do you want that much taken out in taxes?
