Why are parents so reluctant to educate themselves?

I meet other parents every day (at the playground, library, shopping...) and continually I am amazed at the general ignorance that is out there. No one stops to think, then perhaps do a little research or investigation. They just go day-to-day never thinking for themselves. They walk around with their brain turned off. Smoking, drinking, alcohol, coffee, candy, soda pop, fast food, TV dinners... everything they eat comes from a package. Then they get pregnant and their kid has all these health problems. They haven't a clue. Allergies, asthma, diarrhea, puking, coughing, fevers, brain slowness, just sickly in general. They have a million excuses not to breastfeed, and shove formula, snacks, candy, sausages, etc. into their kid that can't even talk yet. They love to talk about all of the problems their kid has yet never do any research. They just join in on the 'sick' cult with the other parents and share their stories and crazy ideas of how they deal with it. Are people really STUPID?

In general....in answer to your final Q.....YES, the masses are "that" stupid. People need to know how horrible processed foods are. I try not to place judgment, my comment was rude, I know.
There are alot of factors involved though. Like, two parents-both needing to work, and at that..multiple jobs--just to make ends meet. Unlike the "good ol' days".....women are not afforded the luxury of time or money to stay at home and plan and make healthy meals. Convenience is key in these situations.
I think that, in general....parents are fatigued beyond repair. There never seems to be enough time or money to do most things the way we aught to do them. As a mother of 4, I do not have time to even take care of myself. These may be excuses, but we each have our own set of dilemma's that steer us this or that way.....?

Honestly you're a lot like the pot calling the kettle black.

Allergies are not caused by eating fast food or because the child wasn't breastfed. There are tons of mothers who eat healthy, take good care of themselves, breastfeed, and still have children with allergies and health problems.

I will agree with you that there are tons of hidden munchausen's parents out there. Parents who would rather get attention for how sick their kid is, than actually make an effort to get their child well. One such case is a mother who knows her child is allergic to several foods, but it was "too hard" so she just feeds her child whatever. Needless to say the child is severely sick, asthmatic and on a ton of medications.

Mostly I find that people just don't care. Its not really stupidity.. but a severe case of apathy mixed with ignorance.

I can't really say that doctors are all that much more helpful, as most are "educated morons" who merely prescribe tests from a textbook, and read off an answer. If the test doesn't show it, then you're not really sick. They don't even bother to find an answer anymore.

First of all back the feck up. You basically just threw my child into the sickie "cult" because I smoke, didn't breastfeed and "shove" formula down my daughters throat.

First off: my daughter is perfectly healthy normal and otherwise. I smoked with her while I was preg. and in fact had a bigger baby both length wise and weight size then most women who don't smoke and exercise and what not.

second off: where do you get off judging people? Im sorry that not everyone "researches" into their childrens health problems. But they normally ask questions on here, when whats this, they are researching.

third off: what you just described are common child hood illnesses without the parent be neglectful in your eyes. So uh..

Yes. and NO. Each parent has their own style. Yeah some shouldn't be parents at all given the things they do to their children and how they hurt their own children. But, if they genuinely care about their kids, then let them parent how they choose to parent. If we don't like the way some parents feed their kids sweets at under a yr old, oh well, we don't have to do that for our children now do we? Formula vs breastfeeding....always been controversy there, always will be. There's always going to be the LaLeche league saying that breastmilk is the only way to feed your infant...always going to be some medical, or personal choice of another mom to formula feed instead. Illnesses, some are genetic, some are induced by habits and behavior, just depends. So, yes, there are people really that stupid, and no, there are many very well educated parents.

I'd probably say you just have had bad luck meeting other parents...BUT after knowing a mom like this I have to agree.

Giving a child juice all day long will give him diarrehea. It will cause him not to grow. He will consistantly be on the low percentile because his nutritional needs are not being met.

When your child is constantly sick blaming the daycare should get a bit redunant. What are YOU doing to boost his immune system?

What about the cranky child who isn't trained to nap? And, just goes on and on wailing until he passes out on the floor. Then, he's taken up to his crib for a nap.

Naps help boost brain function. I would assume that all the junk and lack of sleep could permantely impair a developing mind. At this age the brain is forming new connections. These connections form your child's mind for the future. I wonder if this isn't the root cause of behavior disorders like ADHD...

You sound nasty, Just because a mother eats food from a package and drinks pop and smokes does not mean shes going to have a stupid baby, in fact i find your post really rude and stupid. If they dont raise their kids by reading a textbook telling them what to do then mabye they have more common sense then you do? Even if they read the book and it said not to feed the baby candy they probably would anyways and its their choice.! What the hell is rong with eating sausages?? Seriously? And formula is rong now too? well guess what honey my baby is formula fed for two months and she has hit all of her milestones early, some of them even a few months early so take that to the guiness book of world records because according to you i should have a stupid baby. Go to hell.

Btw my baby is perfectly healthy and has pretty much doubled her birth weight at three months..another thing to disprove your stupid post.

and another thing all people that interact with my baby actually notice that shes pretty sharp because she is....its genetic idiot..why dont you research that?

As a parent myself, I have never been so insulted. Who are you to tell other people how to raise thier children? There is nothing wrong with formula, especially if there's a medical reason for it. I couldn't breast feed when my little girl was a baby, my milk wasn't satifying her. You seem to expect to allow mothers who cannot breast feed to let thier hungry babies scream, just because you believe formula is wrong? There is also nothing wrong with a little treat now and then, and what is this bull about sausages? Most children won't eat chops or steak, so sausages or mince is the next best thing. Let kids live a little. They're only young once.

first, there is nothing wrong with formula... kids who are formula fed are no sicker or healthier than kids who are breast fed. Second, diarrhea is caused by dehydration. Puking, coughing and fevers are caused by colds... such as those brought on by it being cold outside. Brain slowness is often hereditary... I have family that is autistic and quite frankly find it offensive when people who are just as uneducated as those they decide to judge assume that their learning disabilities are something that their parents caused. Feeding children small snacks throughout the day is actually what is recomended by many nutritionists... actually eating small snacks throughout the day is what is recomended for people of all ages. Oftentimes, the easiest ways to learn about something or find a way to deal with the situation is to talk to other people and share stories and crazy ideas of ow they deal with it. I agree, there is a lot of ignorance in the world... but maybe you should do a little research yourself before you decide to pass judgement on others.

your talking about 70 present of the growing up poeple do you realy think that they are stupid ? they run contries and are egucated poeple and plus you should know that when you be over 28 it became hard to think and learn it never easy to learn old that why they teach 6 and even 5 years old kids in schools so no they are not stupid they just tired and want some peace on there own way .
