Stink bugs are insects of the Order Hemiptera (the
true bugs) and the family Pentatomidae (misspelled by another answerer). They come in
a variety of colors, one of the common ones is
green, and they do emit a distinct smell when
disturbed. They are not related to the potato "bug"
which is a beetle (Order Coleoptera).

Many other insects that are not stink bugs are also
able to produce strong odors, some of the leaf-
footed bugs, carabid beetles, some stick insects,
some green lacewings, etc.

When talking about stinkbugs people are usually refering to insects of the family pentanomidae, they are shield shaped insects (hense their other name shieldbug), some species do smell but not all. They are generaly green or brown (tough variation occurs depending on specie),Some species are predatory but most are not and are feed upon a wide variety of plants.. For more detailed info check out this site http://insected.arizona.edu/stinkinfo.htm . Tough it's possible you were thinking of insect since this is not a trait limited to these guys, for example some beetles will release a rather unpleasant odour if they are caught

Stinkbug is a wide family that extends, if i am right, to the potato bug. And yes, they do stink.
