are you referring to Los Angeles or Louisiana?

In most districts in LA, namely LAUSD, your pay increases every year you teach, until it can't anymore. It's called being at the "highest salary table." In addition to this, you can take classes to make your pay go up. These are called salary point classes. Plus, there are taxes, and all that stuff that you youngins (I'm assuming you're young and looking to your future) don't have to worry about. So you have your "gross," which is how much you get paid pre-tax, and "take home," which is post-tax. When I first started, my "take home" salary was 1,900 a month. I know, a joke. Pretty soon after, I got my credential and masters and my pay increased significantly. Now, my take home pay is 2,600 or so monthly. Yeah, it still sucks, but I live a reasonably comfortable life so I'm not complaining.

Depends on the district and the state....In AZ public education varies on average 32,000-35,000 a year and then you have to either get your masters or do a career ladder if your district offers it. Otherwise you could be teaching for 20 years and still be making the 35,000 that a new teacher in their 4 year is making. I knew going into Education wasn't for the money.

You can not pay them enough. Their job is wonderfully rewarding and the pay is ridiculously inadequate. Sad, but true. If you enter teaching for the money, you'll be leaving after a year or two.
