You would get the y term on one side of your equation, then divide as necessary to get only y, like this:
2x + 4y = 17
Subtract 2x from both sides, to get:
4y = -2x + 17
Divide both sides by 4 to get:
y = (-1/2)x + 17/4
Your equation is now in y=mx+b form, where m = -1/2 and b = 17/4.
Hope that helped!

Solve for y:
2x+4y=17
Subtract 2x from both sides
4y = 17-2x
Divide both sides by 4
y = 17/4 - 2x/4 which is the same as
y = 17/4 - x/2.
To get it in the form y=mx+b, simply switch the -x/2 and the 17/4.
y = -x/2 + 17/4.

solve for y
2x + 4y = 17
2x + 4y - 2x = 17 - 2x (subtract 2x from both sides)
Now 4y = 17-2x
4y / 4 = (17 - 2x ) /4 (divide both sides by 4)
y = (17 - 2x) / 4
y = 17/4 - (1/2)x (by distributing the 4)
y = (-1/2)x + 17/4
so m = -1/2 and b = 17/4

2x+4y=17
4y=17-2x (can the y and the x on opp. sides by subtractin 2x from each side)
y= 17/4 - 2/4(x)( divide everything by the constant infront of the y, so you have the y equalls)
y= -1/2x+ 17/4(reduce and make sure that x is your leading coefficant)
5x+25y=100
25y=100- 5x
y=100/25- 5/25(x)
y=-5/25(x) + 4

ok now the thing that u always have to remember is y=mx+b always when ur at the test or in class u have to remember that and alll u do is apply it
2x+4y=17 original equation
4y= -2x -17 subtract 2x cuz it was positve and when u swich it it turns to negitve and remember y=mx+b form
y= -2/4x -17/4 divide by 4 u divide cuz it was multiplied
y= -1/2x -17/4 you have to simplify it

Subtract the 2x from both sides. This gives you 4y=-2x+17.
Then divide everything by 4. This gives you the answer.

1. Subtract x from both sides to single out the y so it will be 3y=-x+7 2. Divide both sides by 3 because you want y alll by itself. so it would be y=-1/3x +7/3
