Talk with him and let him know what you're thinking. Then he can decide if he wants to try harder or if you should replace him.

i'm a bassist, and that i'll provide this a shot. that's no longer continually tricky to hearken to the bass. some cutting-side rock bands blend the bass aggressively low, yet very almost all soul and hip hop (and any type spinoff of both of those 2) has very well-liked bass. interior the rock international, maximum rock in the previous the '80s has bass you are able to listen quite easily, and after that that's specifically tricky rock bands that drown it out. for sure, it is also extra accessible to hearken to in case you play bass (i assume). i do not comprehend if there are any recommendations i'll grant you with about listening to the bass, though; if i'll't listen any bass, and that i comprehend bass is there, i'll many times basically pay interest heavily and pay interest to it. Bands have more beneficial than one guitarist because it takes more beneficial than one guitar to make their music. vast bands may have 25 musicians going instantly. in case you want a good, prepared experience, including musicians helps. music isn't about fairness between gadgets; if a band needs to have 2 loud guitars that drown out the bass, that's their prerogative; hopefully sticking with their musical resourceful and prescient will produce the proper outcome. The Dirtbombs are a mind-blowing band with 2 bassists. examine 'em out. that's tricky to reply to the question "Why is there a bassist?". To rephrase some stuff i have already suggested, the bass is there because the artist needs it. It (commonly) resources team spirit and rhythm, coming up a assessment of pitch frequencies (or something.) that's ignorant to easily create a blanket actuality that music ought to suck without the bass. some artists don't have bass, and they sound good, because it really is the sound they're going for, and it works. some music, on the different hand, ought to disintegrate without the bassist, because that's what (in certain situations) keeps each thing jointly. each thing may seem flat and compressed. And what ought to funk be without bass?

Ultimately then, what is your goal?
If you are serious, then you need serious members in the band.
It sounds like your bassist considers your band a pastime for him.
If it is and your goal is higher, you need to tell him to make a choice.
Bottom line is that you all have to want to be going in the same direction.

Have you considered a less talented bassist who has a hungry heart?

You can always work with someone who is hungry.
Sounds like your present bassist lacks in desire and common goal.
If you want to get rid of him and you have already tried to get him on the same page, then maybe it's just not ever going to work, and so replace him.
Sometimes it has to happen. No one ever feels good about it, but your desire for your band have to come first.
Perhaps he is just not a good lyricist?
You have two choices really:

1. Talk to him one more time, set a time limit, and see if he improves.

2.Tell him now he's out.

Seriously consider a less talented musician who has a big desire, make sure you post around for openings in your band.
Sometimes you have to go through alot of bad ones to get the right fit.

But maybe you already know what you want to do. :0)

I know how you feel.

Being a musician myself I know what its like to try and start a band. I tried really hard to get a band together with my friends. However, I was the only one that took it serioulsy. I wanted to be the leader of the band, but I couldnt find anyone else to be in my band.

Eventually, I just had to bite the bullet and I joined someone elses band. It was a good decision becuase nobody is the "leader" and we all get to write music.

That may be what you have to do. Trust me, it isnt that bad.

Just tell him that that he has to do the work if not he's out of the band. Or Get a record signing and then he'll probably start working.

Have you asked him if he can write? Maybe that's the problem. Sounds uninspired. Dump him if you want the band to move forward.

You should just tell him how you are feeling and if that doesn't work, then you should try being lazy and give him a taste of his medicine

If you have a keyboard player, he/she can carry the bass line, as in the Doors.
