It won't really hurt the cars engine, but it will be a bit tough on the paint, you should rinse it off as soon as possible. There is also a little safety hazard, should someone toss a lit cigarette near the car, because it will drain the excess gas down through the overflow onto the ground, making your vehicle a blowtorch waiting to be lit off.

I have, on occasion, had the gas heat up and overflow out the gas cap (or one one motorcycle, just parking it on the kickstand changed the angle enough to have the gas spill out) if I overfill a fuel tank and then leave the vehicle parked without driving it very far. This has only happened to me on older (that's as in pre 1980) vehicles so far with different fuel fill tubes from modern machinery, but it's not very good for the paint in any case.

Never go past the first click on filling your tank. At least not on modern fuel injected cars. If you overfill the excess can spill over into the charcoal canister filter and ruin it. Can cost several hundred dollars to fix. Always stop at the first click.

if it is a newer model car and you overfill it you can have raw fuel drawn into the vapour recovery canister under the hood, this can ruin the charcoal and filter in it as well as set codes in the computer for running too rich, best bet is to run it a while before parking it to draw the fuel level down.worst case you could get fuel dripping out of the canister

Agreed overfilling a newer car is NOT a good idea. Unless you like to give you mechanic money.

it won't hurt anything. I have heard that you won't get as good of mileage when you over fill, but I do it all the time and haven't noticed a difference.
