It's a scam. YOU CANNOT BUY A STAR!!

Real stars have names like HD 1234.3 -0128 or something

Every star down to like the 21st magnitude has already been discovered over 50 years ago, (in the Palomar Sky Survey) and they could never keep track of all several billion stars if they had special names that could be changed at a whim.

So unless you have a telescope large enough to park your car inside then you'll never probably discover a star (which would recieve a designation anyhow).

It *is* however possible to name an asteroid or have a comet named after you, but in the modern era the time and effort required to do that is way beyond what most people would do.

Don't fall for it, for $100-200 you can buy a real telescope and look at the stars.

Don't bother. The International Astronomical Union is in charge of figuring out star names (there are conventions to naming them), as well as conventions for supernovae, grb, and so on. Basically, if you discover a comet, planetary nebula, or maybe a planet, you can name it after yourself. You can't name stars, and no one can, so if you're 'buying' a star, all you're buying is a peice of paper. No one other than the IAU can name stars, and they don't name them after people. No exceptions. If you're buying a star for someone, then they are probably interested in astronomy, and already know this, and they will be sorry you wasted your money in this fashion.

Besides, I know someone who 'bought' a star for $50 a few years ago and wanted to look at it through my university's telescope - they couldn't have seen it with Hubble even if it DID exist - which it didn't. They were sold a non-existant star according to every astronomical database.

That buy a star stuff is pretty shady. There isn't anyone who has the right to sell a star. Sounds like a money making gimmick. They could easily just "sell" the same star over and over.

It's a waste of money, the names aren't actually recognized by any astronomy society, so you're basically buying a piece of paper and nothing more. If you still insist on "buying a star," I'll sell you one for $50.

Don't spend any money it is worthless. BUT.......
You can register by claiming into your name, a celestial body, through Archimedes Space Law Institute. AND IT IS FOR FREE.
The "terms" are that you must have full details for the body you claim, that means you must have some special knowledge in Astronomy.
According to International Treaty 1967,
"Article II
Outer space, including the moon and other celestial bodies, is not subject to national appropriation by claim of sovereignty, by means of use or occupation, or by any other means", but it leaves open to the "individual" appropriation.

It is a kind of "MONOPOLY" for the Universe.
The value of the title you get is equivalent of the titles in "MONOPOLY".

You can find more info at the "Archimedes'" site, as well you'll see claims that have been done by individuals and have got into their names Land in the moon and they resale it (Lunarembassy) or hundreds of "Galaxies", and they are the richest (on paper) persons in the world.

It's a scam. Don't waste your money.

Write your friend/sweetie/favourite aunt a heartfelt poem instead. Or send them a beautiful bouquet of flowers. Or plant a tree in their name. Or offer to wash their car.

You'll both get more out of one of those kinds of gifts.

I'll sell you one. You pick one out, any one, send me money and it's yours. You can also name it anything you want for an additional fee. If anyone asks, I'll swear it's yours.
