What do you think of women who stay in physically abusive relationships? Do you think some men should be given the chance to show they would never do it again, or after the first time they should be out the door?

Halle Berry had her hearing knocked out in one of her ears by the baseball player guy she was dating way back when. That wasn't the first time he'd put his hands on her.

I doubt she's lost any fans over it, but it seems that most people feel physical abuse should never be tolerated under any circumstances. What say you?

Many women who are in abusive relationships don't see their situation as being that bad, after years of enduring abuse they might develop what is known as learned helplessness. They have been abused for so long that they now just bear it and put up with it because they don't believe they can do anything about it. Once a man has been abusive chances are he will abuse again unless some drastic measures are taken such as anger management or couples therapy, however the physical safety of the woman and her children if any should be the most important factor to consider, however the emotional/psychological effects of any abuse can be equally destructive.

Physical abuse should never be tolerated. Many women stay because they are afraid to leave. Some believe the person when they say they will never do it again. It took me 7 years to get out of an abusive situation. Sheer fear for my life is what kept me there for so long.

I've been there, and its not as easy to just get out as you might think. They tend you beat you down emotionally first, make you think its your fault and your not worth of anything better. You've got to have the confidence to leave that kind of relationship, no matter how you feel about the abuser. Never give them a second chance, if you survive the first one. No one has the right!

Tolerating physical abuse is a sign of low self-esteem. I say get out of the relationship. No second chances here!!

Abuse is abuse no matter whether it is physical, mental or emotion. No it shouldn't be tolerated and no one should be victimized by abuse.

Second chances....mmmmm that is debatable. I kind of think once it has happened once...it makes it easier for it to happen again with excuse.

There should not be a second time. If a person puts their hands on you they need some serious help. You can be their friend and support them getting help, but you shouldn't stay. You may be a trigger for violence for that person. Don't wait until it is too late.

I agree, after the first time they should be out the door.

You don't know how complicated the situation is until you have been there yourself. I was there (not now!) but now I see a super close girlfriend going through it. When I asked her why she doesn't leave, she reminds me that I took SEVEN YEARS to get the strength to leave.

Support your friend in the abuse but don't get in the way. They'll end up resenting you. If it's you, get out. That's my support!
