log5(x^2-1) - log5(x-1)
= log5 [(x^2-1)/(x-1)]
= log5 [(x-1)(x+1)/(x-1)]
= log5 (x+1)

log5(x^2-1) - log5(x-1)
log5 [(x^2-1)/(x-1)]
log5 [(x+1)(x-1)/(x-1)]
log5 [(x+1)]
only works when x is not 1.
