Well, Judaism was the first monotheistic religion, blossoming among animistic and polytheistic religions of the time. Because they were a minority, they were then discriminated against and killed for their strange and new beliefs. Since Judaism never really grew to be a majority in many locations, they were always persecuted by other religions, even Christianity, which started off as a branch of Judaism. It can pretty much be blamed on the fact that religions do their best to kill weaker ones off, therefore targeting/blaming minority religions.

Every era needs a scapegoat, and the Jehovah's chosen ones supplied them. Why weren't other religions or peoples persecuted so consistently down thru the ages is got to be regarded as an anomoly, coincidence, or conditioning by one generation to the next...sort of like gaining momentum. The easy target for Hitlerites to blame their woes on the Jews in the 30's, as well as the psycho Christians in medieval times calling them Jesus killers. And now, their old homeland is occupied by Muslims, they just cant' win.

Prior to the founding of modern Israel after the second world war, the Jewish people had no nation. They were scattered through out Europe and ant Middle East in small group that functioned as sub-cultures within the culture at large. People of a Jewish heritage lived in greater societies that were largely homogeneous, Christian or Muslim. And so, Jews were views as outsiders, nonconformists. This coupled with the fact that these Jewish communities were prosperous. Mainly because they believed in community. There closed communities existing within homogeneous larges societies led to suspicion and then oppression.

For one thing they were good at business matters, so they often had more money/better success. Because of this success, they often became the scapegoat for many other cultures. Also, they were prejudiced against because they were Jews, the group that crucified/betrayed Jesus. Many Christian groups/cultures disliked them because of the history.
