Christmas is a holiday created by the Catholic church many centuries ago to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. The date Dec. 25th was chosen by the Pope Julius I in order to make disappear the old pagan celebration of Hagia Fota (Invincible Sun) created by the Romans. However, thanks to th description of the environment made by the Bible by that time, scientists estimate that Jesus was born between April or May.
Starting in the last century, Christmas actually became a sales season for many businesses, forgetting the real meaning of this Holiday.

It is the best secular holiday around.
It was originally to celibrate the survival of winter. That's why we have evergreen trees, green mistletoe, and holly. It symbolizes life contrinuing through winter.
It has evolved into a holiday where we celebrate many great ideals, such as:
1) Peace on Earth
2) Goodwill towards men
3) Family
4) Remembering and helping those less fortunate than us
5) The joy of giving
6) Great food, drink, and socialization
7) Song
And other things...
Oh, yeah, the Christians celebrate their dead prophet's birthday on this day although he was really born in the spring. And they slapped their name on it.
But really it is a celebration during what is otherwise a dismal time of year.
