I do believe that is true. It's often said that you have to love yourself first to be happy, but once that's accomplished, it's tough being alone.

It's definitely a possible reason. Another reason is just the big deal that people make about love in the modern times. Many people make it sound like if you don't marry, you die sad and alone, which isn't necessarily true (just because you don't have a spouse or boy/girlfriend doesn't mean that friends and family can't support you).

I think biological and instinctive properties may also be at work: if you don't have someone to love, you can't have a child of your own to pass along your genes, which is the focus of most beings that perform sexual reproduction (and it is why humans have a sex drive).

But I definitely think that you hit the nail pretty much on the head. Humans are social creatures, and, because of that, fear loneliness (often a cause for depression).

(As for the random factoid of the day: single men live shorter lives than married men, and single women live longer lives than married women.)

i think depression is most definatly a state of mind i think if you tell yourself you are having a great day than you can trick yourself pretty easily so people that are depressed really just want to be (with the exception of people with the gene or whatever) and actually love is not the main purpose in life my purpose(s) are God over all and then following my dreams. I swear on my life that i will not get married or have kids until i have succeeded with my dream because i know that if i didnt i would be so dissapointed in myself

People are depressed because they don't know how to act by themselves. They need to learn to see beauty in all things. They need to see the essence of love in everything. Friendship is love. Family closeness with parents or siblings. A dog or cat to hold. A bike ride in the hill country of Texas or near the beaches in California will show the love of land. There are so many loves. It needs only to be spiritual and emotional (not even necessarily religious as spirituality is a given love by a higher being and religion is more the belief in a particular God's rules). I have love, but it's not physical beyond hugs. I have had physical love. I'm happier now.

Love is like water, it fits the container into which it is poured. There are as many kinds of love as there are people and ways of relating to them, and you have a different sort of love for your granny than you have for your cat and entirely different from the love which you have for your grand amour (I hope). Everyone has the opportunity to live a loving life at some level, but when we get pre-occupied with one part of being a loving person at the expense of loving in a healthy way in all areas of our lives, we become fragmented and dysfunctional and friendless, or even so foolish and desperate that we "would do anything for love" and forget that love is more than just finding a romantic partner.

I do believe that we are all born out of love, I guess the people without love as what you call them, just don't see the difference God put upon on each day...

TO LIVE- that's life. TO LIVE WORTHWHILE -that's life with love.

it's not really a purpose, but a great companion of a LIFE well lived. most importantly a cure when the world causes LIFE so much pain & suffering.
Hence , LIFE without LOVE, is surely gonna be so depressing.
