Please do not pick anyone as best answer that claims that Dems are liberal and Repubs are conservative....

This is flat out not true!

There are many "extremist" "liberal" Republicans... these words are subjective adjectives.... used to poke at the other party.

Democrats and Republicans alike are constantly changing their issues based on what the current political climate looks like and what the other party is doing.

It is very "liberal" to put the 10 commandments on a court house lawn for example....

It is also very "conservative" to strengthen our communities by investing in education....

You see, it's all a matter of perspective.

A Republican (areal republican) believs in leaving you alone to take charge of your own affairs. The goverment should only be in your life in a limited way. The Democrats (real democrats) believe they can run your life better then you can. They just say give us your money & we will make sure you are taken care of. Dont worry where the money comes from because we will get it from those who have worked hard & made something of their lives & give their money to you with out giving them anything in return, That is why I do not belong to either party. I am Independet//

People in the US are free to choose whatever they want to be politically whether it means being a republican, democrat, liberarian, communist, or Indedependent. Our founding fathers and first US Govt. had no political parties (at first). It only got infected with political parties after George Washington's 1st term.

The basic difference is that Republicans follow a conservative philosophy and Democrats follow a liberal philosophy.

A liberal would say that a proper role for government is to regulate and oversee the economy. Liberals say it's proper for government to ensure that companies do the right thing (such as pay minimum wages), and to ensure that people act responsibly in their finances (such as requiring contributions to retirement savings).

A conservative would say that a proper role for government is to regulate and oversee morality. Conservatives say it's proper for government to ensure that people are punished for immoral acts (such as taking drugs), and that people act appropriately in their marriages (such as banning homosexual marriage).

A libertarian would say that neither of those is a proper role for government. Libertarians say that the only proper role is to maintain an army for defense against invasion, to maintain a court system for ensuring justice, and other constitutionally defined roles.

A populist would say that both economic and moral intervention are proper roles for government.

Some people classify libertarians as conservatives and some classify populists as liberals. Those definitions fall apart when libertarians talk about moral issues like abortion (pro-choice) or drugs (pro-legalization).

i was raised by both parents--they were so far "right" that they would refer to a democrat as a COMMUNIST PINKO! well, i didnt want to be a communist pinko so i was a republican--until one day when i said--WHY? these guys only want to help themselves and no one else--look at cheney? he is the coldest dude i have ever seen--those eyes are steel--that heart is a cold rock! and our dear pres--the little rooster, does his little puppet dance for this cold monster--who is, unknownst to us all, actually running our country. isn't that Christian of the dear republican party? any one as cold as this man is--has a $ for a heart--this is his GOD.
and yet Christians are so fooled into voting for this party--why? over one issue--ABORTION. i too, believe that abortion is wrong in most cases, but the lesser of 2 evils brings me to vote DEMOCRAT.

Political parties are merely an illusion, because THIS secret and evil group has been in control of everything for far too long!...
