the hymen is a thin piece of skin that women have covering their vaginal opening. it can be broken open during the first time having intercourse, which is where the term comes from. but it can also be broken from a variety of other things, like being very active in sports, using a tampon for the first time, or if god forbid you were abused. in this case, you have NOT lost your virginity. Losing your virginity is when you have chosen to have sex with another consenting person for the first time.
