Trade on the Indian Ocean was mainly conducted by Arabs sailing Dhows, the design of which hasn't changed for centuries. Advantage was taken of the prevailing winds blowing towards India during the winter months and t'other way in the summer, enabling them to return home. Quite what they carried to India I don't know, but on the return they would have carried spices etc., which were in great demand. These would even reach the Roman Empire in due course. Who benefited? The traders, because they made a lot of dosh supplying peoples wants. The consumers who had access to goods they wanted or needed.
