The best way to kill mold is with chlorine dioxide gas. Chlorine dioxide is used in libraries to control mold. There is documentation of this use here:

As a gas, it gets everywhere in the room, and using it doesn't involve spraying solutions on surfaces. Adding moisture is never a good idea, even if you think you can dry things out quickly.

There are products that release small amounts of this gas by reaction with humidity in the air. You can get Starbrite Mildew Control Bags from Westmarine. They're sold for use in boats.

The gas breaks down into nothing more than chlorine ions (as in table salt) so there is no chemical residue once the treatment is over. It should be fine for your wife once the room is aired out.

Chemically sensitive...hmmm.

You may have to get her out of the house for a while.

I recommend cleaning the basement well, prepping the surfaces and repainting with mold resistant paint. Then use a dehumidifier to keep the humidity low. Mold spores are everywhere, they just need water, a crack and a little dust to grow. If you repaint and keep it dry, the mold should not grow.

You might get away with just the dehumidifier. But the paint is the final solution that has worked well for me a few times.

you can try hydrogen peroxide or you can use lemonjuice ,put it in a spray bottle and cover the area with it. But more importantly find out where the mold is coming from. In basements the most likely source is a drainage field that is not sloped correctly, so water pools around the walls and saturates them. The other more obvious is cracks in your foundation. The sooner you find the source, the sooner you can get the problem stopped. Good Luck

The sheet rock really needs replacing. The mold will be through out the sheet rock. If you can not replace it, bleach and water will remove the mold. There is a special paint that is make to cover up the mold after it has been washed..
