OK, from SJ, I'd personally take 880 through Oakland to 80. Traffic may suck a bit depending on your timing, but it's better than going on 680. When you hit 80, watch for the Napa signs for Hwy 29. Follow those.

After you're in Napa for a while and want to go to Sonoma, then take 29 back to the Sonoma exit to the west. Sonoma has a really neat town square, and an excellent cheese shop. From there, hit 101 and go straight up to Eureka!

Hwy 101 is very scenic. You may want to check out the Avenue of the Redwoods; it parallels Hwy 101. I think its well past Willits towards Eureka, but I'm not positive.

For an adventure, you can take Hwy 299 from Eureka to Redding (and then take I-5 back). Hwy 299, in places, is the windiest road in America. In long stretches, you can't drive more than 20 mph because there is one hairpin turn after another. Be very cautious. After 20 consecutive curves, you think that there can not possibly be another curve, but there are five more curves. This is only for a few miles; the rest of the drive is scenic through rustic areas.

There is not much to Eureka. Eureka has seen better days when the lumber industry was in full swing. They have one nice mall and a community college or two. Most of the town is old houses that can be rented very cheap.
