i think you should look at Toshiba and Sony. I have experience with Toshiba and have been more than satisfied with their products. Sony i think they are a good brand and you probably would find want you want in one of theirs. i am looking for a computer too so i've done some reseach. oh and forget AMD proccessors. Intel is the way to go. Great Core 2 Duo. that's probably the best one. and one of my relatives had a really really bad experience with Gateway. He said he'd never buy a Gateway computer again because it was so bad. but all your decision, good luck!

get a Compaq or an alienware.
Get one with the AMD processor, they are much faster, and more reliable. I done a hell of a lot of research before buying mine, and people always ask me why mine runs faster than theirs, that is why.
Also recommend putting lots of ram in any that you get, but you don't have to buy it from the manufacturer, get it fro newegg.com or tigerdirect.com get crucial ram.
I use a Compaq with an AMD Turion processor, been using it for 1.5 years, 2 gig of ram, 100 gig HD. It serves as a music player with 7700 songs on it as well as my alarm clock, so that should show you how much I trust it. has to be reliable and run all night every night. it does very well.

Frankly, it really depends on your location.
If you are in the US Dell is good (but it is relatively big).
In Asia Fujitsu (number 1 in Asia, good quality and light weight),
but Never go for Sony computers, it really sucks (I got one years ago and it was a disaster, it hang ever minutes, and they check it for 'n' times but can't fix it, so I sold it to the "Computer junk yard"). It really looks good, but far from good!
By the way, a desk top will be great if you are not intent to bring your computer everywhere, it is cheaper, cheaper to maintain and easier to upgrade, etc...
