lol-"Laughing Out Loud" is the equivalent of a smile in real conversation.
LOL-"Laughing Out Loud" would be the equivalent of a chuckle.
lmao-"Laughing My @ss Off" would be the equivalent of a slight laugh.
rofl-"Rolling On Floor Laughing" would be a laugh.
rotflmao-"Rolling On The Floor Laughing My @ss Off" would be laughing a lot.
I use these acronyms a lot in my IMing conversations, and I do use them to degrees.

I dont' care what you choose....i use lol cuz it's the simplest, i don't use rofl cuz it sounds dumb, and i dont' use anything wiht a swear word in it so i wouldn't use anything with lmao in it.
