Aww,

What a classic computer you have there. I still remember those days I had my Quantum FireballPlus AS harddrives.
However, you have some problem it seems, but I need to clarify some things.

Maxtor N40P is a notorious model of maxtor with bad firmware. But I have to make sure which model your maxtor is. It should be one of these model numbers: 6E020L0 (20GB), 6E030L0 (30GB) and 6E040L0 (40GB). The brand name of it is "Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 8". If this is not correct then you must have something else.

I've heard if in the bios it says "Maxtor N40P" instead of the model number, it may be the model with the firmware problem. If its working properly but just the message on the bios, then you should just ignore it. But if it is causing operational problems, I suggest you stop using it. Where did you get it? If you can, you should return it for a new one, but I guess its an old batch so you may not have a better luck with a newer drive of the same model. Get a newer maxtor (DiamondMax Plus 10 or 11).

Good luck.

Go to the Intel web site and type in the numper of your CPU's chip set. This will then take you to a page of Intel chip set families select your chip set from the list. When the next page comes up look for a file called Intel Software Setup Utility. This file tell windows how to comunicate with all the hardware connected to you computer.

Good Luck
I hope this helps

Did you remember, to set the second drive as the slave? Check the BIOS to make sure both are being detected.

The drives should be jumpered Master / Slave or Cable Select / Cable Select.

The drive you want to boot should be the master, or if it is Cable Select it should be the farthest one out from the motherboard on the IDE cable.

First try unplugging the HDD (hard disk drive) inside the case and then plug it back in.

If this doesn't work, you must replace it with a new drive.

Sounds suspect to me, might well be the hard drive controller and not the hard drives. See link.
