A new phone through Cingular at a discounted price will extend your contract for two years. Traditionally, you can get an even cheaper price for a new activation; however, a if you were to cancel your contract with Cingular and get a new contract, they will give you a different number.
An alternative would be to look into switching to a different carrier. Switching to a different carrier will not only allow you to get a better deal on a phone but also allow you to "port" or transfer yoru phone number to the new account. The transfer is seamless.

yes if you want the discounted price(2 yr. contract), no if you purchase the phone at full retail price.
