I am a grad student and TA in a math dept; i have very little money, as you can guess. for the last one and half yrs i have been sleeping on the floor; it is not that i cannot get a bed, but my point is that it feels so demeaning to have to buy the cheapest stuff all the time/ or old furniture. the same goes with clothes; there is no way i can buy myself a good jacket with the money i have, so i am sticking out the winter in my tee-shirt. It sure hurts, but am I not doing the honourable thing? Isn't it insulting to go into a store and scavenge for the cheapest goods; is it not insulting to talk to a salesman like an ordinary customer, knowing that quality or taste is the last thing on your mind; all you want to do is live till tommorrow?

if there werent cheaper clothing alot of us would be screwed. be glad its there, dont be ashamed to use it. you might be very surprised to know how many people u pass by each day who wear used clothing and have used furniture. plus, for you it is a temporary situation, as you hope your college education will enable you to get a good job. so, yes, it can get to you or anyone after a while. i know. but for you, since its temporary, just do it, be glad its available and join the club. can build character in a way :) good luck to you

Any item for sale in a store, no matter what the quality, is for sale so the store can make a profit. If you buy even the cheapest thing, they will make money. Go to a thrift store and buy a jacket for 5 dollars. Be warm and be well.

Go to www.freecycle.org.
It is full of offers from people who would rather give stuff away than see it go into landfill. Everything is free - you just need to pick it up. Condition and quality are usually dewcribed in the listings. You will be doing society a favour (are you in England? they have freecycle too).
