I would go a more natural route. Maybe smokey eyes and eyeliner.
Remember: With makeup, less is more. The more natural you look, the more stunning you'll be. Use your eyeshadow to give your eyes a certain look, then go with that.
You could totally do gold- but choose what effect you want. Dusting it on versus applying it liberally is like the difference between whispering in someone's ear and shouting at them. Both are effective depending on what message you're trying to get across.

The good thing about having brown eyes is that there are ALOT of colors that look good on them. The only ones that I wouldn't recommend are ones that are too bright (you don't want to look like a clown) or too light. If the shade is too light, it will either come close to your skintone and wash you out, or look too bright against your eyes. For example, a friend of mine with light skin and blue eyes wore a pretty, slightly sparkly white shade and it looked subtle and great on her. I tried it against my dark eyes and lightly tanned skin and it looked like I had a strip of bright white shadow on my eyelid. Not flattering. Many of the compacts specifically made for brown eyes include shades in the purple range, and I find purple to be especially pretty on people with dark skin.

Luckily, for us brown-eyed people, we can pretty much wear any color we want. Just always remember "less is more". Even though we can get away with blue and purple and green eyeshadow, you don't want to look like you just stepped out of a bad 80's movie.

Any color but brown. Always use the opposite color of your eyes to bring them out, if you are light skin maybe a nice pink or blush color or even a pretty blue, if you are dark skin then use the same colors except a lighter version of them.

I advise, organic tones - different browns, pink for a touch flair (do purely not do the Mimi from Drew Carey), i take advantage of copper on the lid, and a tender brown contained in the ends and a gloomy brown contained in the creases... be sensible to save the colour mild on the forehead ....

You should opt for shades that are opposite of your eye color. Therefore, people who have been suggesting browns are dumb.
Veer towards the purples and pinks (mostly purples) to really make your eyes pop.

I have brown hair, brown eyes and brown skin. Believe me the very best look is brown shadow in two different shades. beautiful brown on entire lid, with a little darker (taupe) in the crease. I lightly outline my lower lids in blue.

you should wear a shimmery gold. a shimmery brown that compliments your skin tone would look good as well. if you want something more vibrant try a shimmery purple or green, but try to stay away from blues and pinks.
