We cut the base of our tree once, put it in water. It drank for about two days and then wasn't drinking anything for about three days. So we cut the base again and immediately put it back in the water and it still is not drinking. What can we do so we don't have a dead tree before Christmas?

You are doing or did the Right thing, They will drink heavy for first couple of days then will almost stop or just drink a little don't worry about it UNLESS the needles start falling real bad then it is dead but I doubt it. Sounds like you are OK

It sounds like the tree is already dead. Sometimes they start cutting and wrapping x-mas trees in Oct. Then ship em or store em up for the holiday season.
Check the trees pulse, , and sap pressure. If you cant find either then it is clinically dead. Give it a decent burial and move on. Otherwise by x-mas it'll look like a dead tree with lights and ornimates on it.
Best bet is to find a place where you can cut them yourself, even if it's a few hour drive.

I actual have 2 cats and the only element that keeps them out of the yuletide tree is a sixty 5 pound Black Lab that they share the domicile with. the only cat have been given in there 2 years in the past and knocked down the tree. Thank goodness we had L.E.D. lighting fixtures (no broken glass) and we use timber adorns. The cats did get into the tree some circumstances final year yet we had no adorns on the botttom of the tree and the dogs positioned them out while he clued in to what they have been doing. And we take care of our tree so lots extra useful now too.

add a little dish soap to thin the water down. the water molecule is to complex to be adequately absorbed, and the pitch is congealing at the wound.
