there is no way of knowing if she fractured her foot without having an xray done.

applying ice will help reduce the swelling and also help ease the pain.

she needs to see a dr within 24 hours as long as she is not in severe pain or having any of the following symptoms (if these are present-then take her to the e.r)

-numbness or tingling in her foot (indicates nerve damage and can interfere with blood circulation)
-the foot turns blue or is cold to the touch (stop using the ice pack and wait 30 mins before testing this). this indicates that blood flow has been cut off to the foot and needs to be treated immediately to avoid loss of the foot
-she is not able to bear any weight on her foot (she can't walk or stand on it)
-the swelling or pain increases

if she has broken the foot itself-then yes she will need a cast to repair it. if the toes have been broken-there is no casting needed. the toes will be taped together to prevent movement while they heal.

for now-continue to apply the ice in 10-15min cycles every 45 mins or until the swelling has gone down. she can take ibuprofen for the pain. if she is over the age of 12-she can take 200-400mg every 6 hours but no more than 1200mg in 24 hours. if she is under 12 then she needs to take children's motrin. the dosage is on the back of the bottle and is based off of her age.

keep the foot elevated on a few pillows as much as possible.

hope she feels better soon
