Just to clarify, the people who are saying that your SAT scores are competative are thinking of the old SAT, which was scored out of 1600, rather than the new one scored out of 2400. A 1320 on the old SAT would approximately correspond to 1980 on the new SAT (an average of 660 on each section).
Of NYU's first year students, only 2% had a high school GPA between 2.5 and 2.99. 98% had a GPA of 3.0 or higher, and 70% had a GPA of 3.5 or higher. The middle 50% of admitted students had math and reading SAT scores between 620 and 710, so assuming that the writing scores were in the same range, the middle 50% had composite scores between 1860 and 2130. That means that only 25% had scores below 1890, and my guess would be that most of those were not very far below.
The fact is that most of the very select schools won't even consider students with a GPA below 3.0 or SATs below about 1500 (an average of 500 on each section). The students who do get in with numbers like that have something else going for them. And by "something else" I don't mean that they just have a really good essay. I mean things like there's a building named after their dad, or their an unbelievable athelete and a sports coach demands they be accepted.
If you really want to try, then go for it, but quite honestly I think you'd be wasting your time and application fee.
Oh, and even if you come from a competitive high school won't make enough of a difference. I had like a 3.4 GPA (and weighted it was over 4.0) from one of the most competitive private high schools in the country, and SAT scores that on the new SAT would have been to about 2290 and I still didn't get in to most of the competitive schools I applied to.

Do you have a chance? Sure. But is it likely? No, it's definitely not like at all. Apply to at least several state and public schools as a backup. NYU is competative, and unfortunately your credentials are not.
You could go to a state school or community college for the first year or two, then attempt to transfer to NYU.

If you can show that your high school has a very tough grading system then you might get some slack (ie, private school).
If you can show that you had a crappy year for a good reason (ie, illness) then that would work in your favor. Generally colleges don't care as much about your overall GPA as the care about your GPA in college-prep classes (bad news for band, choir and hall monitor grades!).
Going in for an interview always helps.
Finally, if your parents aren't rich, and if your grades aren't what you know they could be, then you're a great candidate for a community college. Here in Michigan, the credits AND the grades from community colleges transfer to University of Michigan, Michigan State, and the rest of our big 4-year places, MEANING that a class at a community college is JUST AS GOOD as one at U of M!!! The best news is that it costs 1/4 as much as the big college, and you can either live at home or in student housing.

Ouch - that's tough - you've got excellent SAT score, but you're GPA isn't so great.
You have a number of options for your essay - depending on ethnicity, where you live, what school(s) you've gone to.
I would suggest an essay describing how you grew up - and indicating how you managed to get such exemplary SATs with such an average GPA.
You sound like a brilliant person who was pretty bored in school... so I do think you have a chance - you're simply going to have to exert yourself in the essay to demonstrate your brilliance.
I wish you good luck - and if you want to discuss it more, my IM and email are real here...
I'd be glad to help someone who beat my SAT's get into college - you deserve it.

The SAT range for students enrolled at NYU is anywhere from 1320 all the way up to 1520, so you should be okay in that aspect and the average GPA of NYU enrollees is 3.76. Talk to your english teacher or counselor on how to write an awesome essay! Good luck!

well if your white too bad, if your black your in, affirmative action at its best. i believe anything under a 3.5 you'll have to wait till affirmative action lets the stupid in, then you may have a shot. btw GPA isn't the main thing school looks for drama/band/sports etc will help so make sure you mention extra curricular activities
