Do you mean that food and drink accidentally goes down her windpipe? That's definitely abnormal and definitely needs to be evaluated. There are many different causes for it. It's called dysphagia (the word "dysphagia" covers a variety of different swallowing symptoms)

She should start with her primary physician, who should refer her to a speech pathologist for evaluation. Meanwhile, she would benefit from (1) tilting the head down a little while she chews and swallows, (2) avoid crumbly foods, (3) eat small bites, (4) eat slowly and without distractions.

It's not normal for people to be sick at any age.

It's the way you choose to eat during you life that will affect you when you get older.

Think now while you are young, so you won't wind up like your grandma.

My aunt has that problem and they have to go in every now and then and dilate her throat. Sorry I don't know the name of her condition.

You need to take her to the doctor, and get it checked out. It could be serious.
