Is it just because she died young etc. because I can't stand her singing! They've been playing "Have yourself a merry little Christmas" and I just think she sounds like she's trying to be so uber sweet etc. etc. as if she's smiling while singing etc. It just sounds so hokey or something - I can't really describe it but do you know what I mean?

You certainly have the right to dislike her voice..some people hate many other singers, who I think are lovely and fantastic..I love Tom Jones, many don't....You probably just find her phoney...there are many singers who are syrupy sounding...I personally think she had a pleasant voice, but I never bought any of her songs...didn't find her very 'touching'...however, I did love Tina Turner lol...so see, different strokes, for different folks, and it surely dont mean you are being rude...just have your own taste.

No I don't know what you mean. She had one of the greatest voices ever heard, and her "sweetness" only enhanced it. Yes, compared to today's singers, it probably does sound a bit "hokey", but that's because she lived in a different age than we do today. Back then, people sang songs that made sense, and their emotions poured out to the audience.

I grew up with her singing, I have some of her records, and I remember the day we learned of her death. I was living just miles from her family home in Whittier California, and the amount of people that came and paid respects to her family was overwhelming. She truly touched the lives of many, and it's no wonder to me why it's still felt today.

I never heard anyone go ga-ga over her, but she did have a unique voice and the songs were catchy. Yes, the songs were hokey, but that was the way it was in the late 60's early 70's.

Karen had a sweet and pure voice. No theatrics there when she sang. Compared to so many today that can't hold a note or can't sign if their life depended on it, Karen was a gem.

Another one was Mama Cass. Her voice was amazing and pure.

Her voice is actually an awesome instrument .It does sound hokey at times ,being the 70's but her sense of melody ,harmony ,and song writing was brilliant! They had so many hit records too ! She was also an excellent drummer ,who sang while she played !

Have you heard Michael Jackson singing Santa Claus is Coming to Town? It's about 1,000 times worse than Karen Carpenter!

Yeah. But it was another time. Sweetness and light, peace and love mixed in with revolution against the Vietnam war and discrimination. A very tumultuous time. Maybe people thought of her as soothing. I found her BLAND. But her death was a very unneccessary sad waste. If you don't like her Christmas song try listening to "close to you" a few times...that will put you into a deep sleep.

She has a lovely voice, really.

She and her brother wrote, sang, played their way through the 70s.

I do know what you mean, that her voice and elocution is not for everyone - I can't stand Kenny Rogers - every song he sings sounds identical - and like he has phlem built up in his throat - disgusting but it's how it sounds to me. See?

Best wishes,

pup
