Congress passed four statutes known as Reconstruction Acts March 2, 1867, March 23, 1867, July 19, 1867, March 11, 1868.

Some of the main points were:

Creation of five military districts in the seceded states (not including Tennessee, which had ratified the 14th Amendment and was readmitted to the Union).
Each district was to be headed by a military official empowered to appoint and remove state officials.
Voters were to be registered; all freedmen were to be included as well as those white men who took an extended loyalty oath.
State constitutional conventions, comprising elected delegates, were to draft new governing documents providing for black male suffrage.
States were required to ratify the 14th Amendment prior to readmission.
In May 1872, Congress passed a general Amnesty Act, restoring full political rights to all but about 500 former rebels. This was considered the end of the fourth bill implemented March 11, 1868.
Most people didn’t feel that Reconstruction was over until 1952 when the ICC removed the punitive discriminatory freight rates from Georgia commerce. Many more believe that in one form or another it is going on today and I agree. While other countries enjoy their heritage back 900 to 1200 years the US Government teaches that Southerners who are trying to remember their heritage from roughly 145 years ago are racist. We are at a heighten era of Political Correctness where anyone insulting, joking, etc a race, group, or sex would be attacked in the media and courts. However ridiculing Southerners is not only approved but encouraged. If you are a member of a minority and meet certain criteria, you can qualify as a specific minority group. E.X. Southerns in particular white Southerners meet these requirements but are continually refused minority status.
There have never been any reparations for Southerners. (It appears there might be for the descendents of slavery).

Republicans were and are the party of Lincoln and these who make money off of War!

Democrats used to care for the people(even Southerners).
God Bless You and The Southern People

"Reconstruction" was the period of American history that followed the American Civil War, during which the North transitioned the South back into the Union. The parallels between Reconstruction and any other post-war occupation certainly apply, with excesses and abuses and resentments.

The Republicans wanted to punish the South. They impeached President Johnson when his reconstruction measures weren't harsh enough. They certainly didn't want to see the old Dem leadership (which had become Confederate leadership during the war) to be allowed back into government.

The Dems were all over the board -- what else is new? The South was run by Dems, a condition that would hold until the 1980's. The politicians that arose during and after reconstruction were Dems. The Northerns Dems, sometimes called "Copperheads", were a lot more forgiving than the GOP, were worked to avoid putative measures against the South.

Initially, blacks were elected to office during reconstruction, but after southerners took control they passed "Jim Crow" laws that not only barred blacks from holding office, but from voting or even standing on the floors of most state legislatures.

During this time, the KKK arose until it was the most powerful non-government organization by the turn of the 19th Century, both in the South and the North (Indiana almost elected the Grand Wizard of the KKK as their governor).

In the west, the "Wild West" that we generally think about in the movies arose, with various Indian wars, and famous outlaws who were generally former Civil War soldiers.

Reconstruction refers to the period following the civil war and rebuilding the south into functional states again. In the civil war, the democrats were in the south and the republicans were in the north. Since then, the parties have basically swapped values systems and a "republican" today would more identify with the democrats of the 1800s.
