He was able to escape because he is an Animagus - meaning he can turn into an animal at will. So he turned into a dog, and when he was a dog, the dementors that keep guard couldn't sense his presence very well, and he was able to get past them. As an Animagus, he was supposed to register with the government so they would know about his abilities, but he was an illegal, unregistered Animagus, so they didn't know he could turn into a dog.

Transformed into his dog shape. Dementors can't sense animals' emotions as easily as humans' so he was able to slip past them.
