Hi
Visit http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/pfinder?tool=setupCategory&query=compaq+presario+5000&dest_page=setupCategory&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en and select your model and you can download the user manual from there which show you how to remove the dvd burner. Once you click your computer model you can see a link Installing or Replacing a Hard Drive. click it and it will show you the photos how to remove cd or hard disk.

Open the bottom part on the front. (That contains the backup CDs)

Inside you will see two arrows pointing to the top part if you feel where those arrows point, you will find two holes. Put your fingers in those holes and pull up gently. The top part will pop off and uncover the area where the CD drives go. If you are replacing a drive just squeeze the levers on either side of the CD drive toward each other and pull the drive out. If you aren t replacing the CD drive, you can do the same thing with the cover of the other hole.

After 9 years, I m guessing you solved the issue, but no one else seemed to know how to do it.

Are you sure you need to remove the front cover? From looking at pictures of that machine the CD drive looks completely exposed on the front of the machine, you should just be able to remove the screws holding the drive to the inside of the machine then slide it out the front.

Not to be a wise guy but if you don't know, you should leave it to someone who does. There are so many computer "geeks" out there. (term of endearment ... really!) You probably know someone who can do it for you if just ask around. Why screw up a $1000 machine for for the sake of a $25 labour charge to install it properly.

unscrew the back and punch the left hand side of the case towared the back, it sounds dumb but it sticks and the only way to do it is hit it. dont worry you wont damage anythng in it, the side is thick aluminum
