His name is "Boone" and it was in order to test him.

He actually put a drug into Boone. He wanted Boone to go on his own vision quest, but he wanted to do it in a way where it would be pure (Boone not knowing what was going on). This way worked and he did indeed have his own vision quest.

Locke thought he had to do this when his own "visions" were failing him by not giving him what he wanted.
