it means you know what they look like, but you don't really know their name or their personality or anything else.

Knowing a person by sight means that you don't really know them because you have not talked to them before, but you see them a lot and know that person only because you see them a lot.

It means that if I see that person on the street, I recognize them. It could also mean, depending on the context in which it was used, that if I "Know someone by sight" it means that I know only who they are, but don't know anything more about them or don't know them personally (or more intimately). I might just know their name.

That means you have seen the person but don't know them personally. If you were to see them you would 'know' then by there description only not there personality.

When I say it, I mean that I can associate the person with a name, but really don't know anything about that person.

You may not know somebody by their NAME, but if someone says "do you know Jessica's mother?" You might know JESSICA who would be your child's friend from school, and you only know her mother by SIGHT because you see her picking up Jessica from school every day. So you don't know her name or know her personally but only know her from SIGHT, vision.
If you think of a LEMON, you would know a lemon by SIGHT (seeing one), SMELL (scent) or TOUCH (because of its shape.) Hope that makes sense.

It means that you recognise them if you see them and maybe might even nod in acknowledgment, but other than that you do not really have a relationship with them and know anything about them.

You know them by the way they look, which utilizes one of your five senses (taste, touch, sound, sight, and smell).
