It means that if I see that person on the street, I recognize them. It could also mean, depending on the context in which it was used, that if I "Know someone by sight" it means that I know only who they are, but don't know anything more about them or don't know them personally (or more intimately). I might just know their name.

That means you have seen the person but don't know them personally. If you were to see them you would 'know' then by there description only not there personality.

You may not know somebody by their NAME, but if someone says "do you know Jessica's mother?" You might know JESSICA who would be your child's friend from school, and you only know her mother by SIGHT because you see her picking up Jessica from school every day. So you don't know her name or know her personally but only know her from SIGHT, vision.

If you think of a LEMON, you would know a lemon by SIGHT (seeing one), SMELL (scent) or TOUCH (because of its shape.) Hope that makes sense.
