My mom's 2002 Dodge Caravan has only 15,000 miles on it, has been serviced regularly, and at the last service the computer hookup (which cost $63, not at a Dodge dealer) indicated "emissions problem." The repairman said emissions problems are covered forever, not just under a regular warranty, but said we should take it to a Dodge dealer. Is that true? The dealer we contacted indicated that working on the emissions system would not be covered and we would have to pay for any work done. The malfunction indicator is not flashing, just a steady yellow/orange glow.

Does your mom's car actually have high emissions? That is very important to know. Hooking it up to a computer does not mean that it won't pass a gas test. And the light does not necessarily mean the problem that caused it to light will make the car fail. "Emission system" is a broad term that could mean a number of sensors that interface with the computer, which may or may not cause it to actually have emission problems.

I believe that Dodges come with a 7 year warranty, and I would carefully look at the manual or sales sticker for verification.

If the car has already failed an emissions test, read on.

It is my understanding that the manufacturer must GUARANTEE under Federal mandate that the car will pass emission for 100,000 miles. No warranty involved. There may be a restriction regarding the age of the car but I'm pretty sure it is ten years. But this is not the case with your mom's car. The kicker is, and don't quote me on this, she may have to be the original owner of the car. In any case, if the car does not pass emissions standards, see another dealer, or go directly to Dodge. Tell them you want the car to pass as required by law and then file a grievance against the dealer/s. I have a case pending with Toyota right now. Guess what? They are starting the repairs on Monday - for free! It's a 2001 Sienna with 72,000 miles on it. Don't get pushed around.

The emission system is under a extended warranty. Usually 5 years or 50,000 miles.
Depending on the month of 2002 when the car was sold you may have a 7 year 70,000 warranty.
Your dealer can get you a printout of your warranty.
Beware , Chrysler is noted for trying to find loop holes in thir warranty program.

Why didn't the guy tell you what the code actually was. Seems like he's giving you the runaround, and making you waste your time. The vehicle is over 3 years old, so the warranty is definitely up on that. So, yeah, you'd have to pay for them to do any work on it.
