Is game piracy really such a bad thing for console companies?

Actually, yes. The playstations aren't as simple downloading a game, burn it and play it. You have a mod it, so it's not like Sony was trying to make it easy. The reason why piracy is a bad thing for console companies is because when you buy a console, they (Sony, Microsoft) are taking a loss on that console. They don't cover their development and hardware costs by direct purchases of the consoles. They make their money off of the licensing etc from the game developers. So Technically, the more consoles they sell, the more money they actually lose (since they are taking a loss on each one), and the more they depend on the games to make up the difference.
