Well.

Some askers just want verification or agreement.

Some askers may opt for the most humorous reply.

And, really, what's "the best answer" to a question?

I've been pleasantly surprised to have my answer picked (rarely, but it has happened) when I suspect that my answer wasn't at all in alignment with the asker's views of things.

In summary, then - who knows? We ARE dealing with people here, not necessarily scholars.

So, what theories have you developed about this?

Well, sometimes I let a question go to vote because of any one of these reasons:
1. I forget about the question, or I'm away from internet access.
2. All of the answers are good, and I'm hard-pressed to figure out which one is the "best."
3. All of the answers are horrible, but I want some of my points back, and I HATE deleting questions.
4. There's more than one right answer.
That's just me. I can't speak for anyone else.

Some people might forget to choose a best answer, or none of the answers really impressed them. Or for some reason they didn't get to a computer in time to choose one.

The person who asked the question, doesn't come back or just decides not to choose a beast answer.
Then the question goes into voting and is chosen by the most votes it gets.

That's arbitrary to the position the person holds in comparison to your own, or my own personal idea of "best" At least we all get to process and evaluate the idea or question and use our brain cells for something that does not harm us or the environment.

Because they are like my sister...She'll ask a million questions but doesn't want the truth or the logical or intelligent answer. She wants me to confirm HER answer. Total agreement is all she is looking for. She's not alone in her thinking. I see it here on Yahoo all the time. I refuse to enable her but that's exactly what she is looking for.

Because sometimes the questioner wants to leave it up to others to decide what the best answer is. This could be because the questioner really doesn't know much about the subject, which could be why s/he is asking questions *here.* :-)

The Asker gets first choice to choose the "Best Answer." If the Asker doesn't choose, the question goes into Voting, and the voters decide.

sumtimes people simply ask a questin just to hear sumthing that will confirm wats in their heads even though they wont admit it. they ask and ask and then wen they see and answer that suits them they click best answer even if its not really. sum people just choose the answers their friends give so that they will all gain points and sum people just pick whichever is simple. people really dont care.

A lot of askers already know the answer they're looking for. If what you write doesn't sit with their opinion, they don't want to hear it.
