Neither is better. Alternative is derivative of classic, and both are derivative of previous forms.
The best music is the music you like. expose yourself to more types of music and you will find more you like.

classic rock.
while i like both, all those old songs were one of a kind, well-thought out, and had amazing guitar solos that took real skill, skill that could only be achieved through endless hours of practice an an intense appreciation for music. the vocals were heartfelt for the most part as well, and usually conveyed a message or the artist's personality, i.e. john lennon. some, like the beatles and the allman brothers, were revolutionary for their time. the reason they are still played on the radio is because they are soo much better than songs nowadays. and just to prove i am unbiased, i definetely did not grow up in the 70's and do not just say this because im too old for alternative, i am only 16.

id say classic rock as well. you had so many original voices back then, the beatles, the doors, mr. cash, janis joplin...alt rock, not to just totally stereotype all of it because I like some of it, its more of a newer spin on something thats already been done. kurt cobains music still rocks tho. =P
